Term 1 Week 10 - Thursday 31st March 2022
News From The Assistant Principal

Year 7 Welcome Afternoon
It was lovely to see our Year 7 parents as they joined their daughters for the Year 7 Welcome Afternoon. Year 7 students were able to take their parents to their Homeroom to meet some of their teachers and show them around the school. A light afternoon tea was available in Mercy Square.
Student Initiatives to Support Project Compassion
Throughout Lent, we continue to reflect on the lives of people vulnerable to extreme poverty and injustice and how as a Catherine McAuley Community we can respond through supporting Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion appeal. The generosity of our students is the pebble that allows Caritas Australia to create the ripples that will improve the livelihoods of vulnerable communities, supporting them to flourish and create opportunities for future generations to live to their full potential and thrive.
During the last 3 weeks of the term students are hosting a range of activities to raise money for Project Compassion.
The activities include the following:
- Easter Egg guessing competition
- Easter Egg raffle
- Bake Stall
- Pancake Stall
- Crazy sock day
- Easter fun photos
- Colouring competition
- Two Dollar Tuesday
- Fifty cent Friday
- Coin flip competition
- Year 10 tradition of the great coin line
We thank the many students who worked with the House Patron and Homeroom teacher to organise these events and activities.
Project Compassion Fundraising

Flood Appeal
Many thanks to the Social Justice Leaders, Alanah and Jasmine, who worked with Ms Lowrencev and Mr Nguyen to promote and facilitate donations to the school’s flood appeal; this collection will be given to the Vinnies Flood Appeal. To date, over $900 has been raised. If you would like to contribute to this you can do so by donating through our bPoint link (Select 'Vinnies Flood Appeal' from the drop down box.)
House Community Day
On Friday, 8th April the school is hosting the inaugural House Community Day with the theme 'Grow in Unity'. The purpose of the day is to build connections within the year group and across the colour House. Students can wear their House colours to school. For example, House coloured top and jeans / black pants. Some Homerooms are organising to dress in a House theme. To meet WHS requirements students must wear closed in shoes such as joggers or sandshoes.
The program for the day will be the normal 5 periods - 50 minutes each period. This will allow for an extended lunch where students are encouraged to organise a shared lunch with their friends. This will be followed by the House Competition. House points will be awarded to the House that has the most students in House colours and participates in the student selected dance the Cha Cha Slide. The staff will start the House competition with a performance of the Cha Cha Slide. This will be followed by each House performing the Cha Cha Slide and the House with the highest participation will win points to go towards the overall House Cup. The day will finish at the normal time of 3:10pm.

Follow Catherine McAuley Westmead on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn for regular updates. One of the posts from this week is shown below:

Many of Ms Szanto’s students don’t realise that Ms Szanto is a former student of Catherine McAuley herself! Ms Szanto, who graduated from Catherine McAuley in 2016, is now a Music teacher at the school and is currently teaching her Year 7 students the guitar.
These Year 7 students won’t know that when Ms Szanto was a student herself the school community loved listening to her play the guitar as she is very talented! This video clip shows highlights of Ms Szanto as a Year 11 student playing her McAuley’s Got Talent winning piece at the end of year performing arts night. The piece is called ‘Gratitude’ by Amin Toofani.
