Term 4 Week 6 - Thursday 21st November 2024

News from the Principal

Tomorrow we welcome our incoming Year 7 students to the school for their Orientation Day. This is a day that is filled with excitement for the students, their parents, and for us, too, as it represents the ever turning circle of girls growing into women. When they do this at Catherine McAuley, they are growing into women of Mercy and love, following in the footsteps of the many strong women who have trod the path before them. Whilst we know that tomorrow brings a sense of anticipation, and some anxiety for some, we greatly look forward to welcoming 210 new students to our school for their Year 7 studies in 2025.

This term our social justice focus is the Jesuit Refugee Centre. We have long supported this very important cause. JRS does important work in supporting families who flee their home countries in search of a safe place to settle. Many of them arrive in Western Sydney, and JRS helps them to settle into their new lives by providing food and household goods as they need them. We support JRS through a combination of donations of household items, as well as fundraising for this cause. In doing this, we are following the example set for us by our foundress, Catherine McAuley, and our Catholic leader, Jesus Christ.

I ask you to encourage your daughters to participate by providing for this important cause. Students can bring in items (these are listed on Compass) and also to attend the ‘Minute to Win It’ competitions taking place in the Forum at lunch times. We would like our commitment to JRS to be successful again in 2024, and invite all students to be involved in the activities that will raise these important funds for JRS. There is further information in the newsletter, including information about how students can purchase ‘Mercy Money’ to use for fundraising such as this.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS - Year 9 Geography students of Mrs Stevens worked in small groups to research the distinctive features, climate, spatial distribution and adaptations of flora and fauna for a given biome.

Using their findings, the students created a tourism expo to ‘sell’ their biome to potential tourists. Through their team strengths of researching, consolidating information and creativity, each group was able to educate their peers on the unique characteristics of their biome.

Mrs Stevens said she was amazed with what the class came up with.
