Term 1 Week 7 - Thursday 14th March 2024

News from the Principal

The NAPLAN exams began yesterday, with students in both Years 7 and 9 completing the writing tests, and today they completed their reading tests. Things went quite smoothly for the students, and they are to be commended on their participation. These tests provide us with important information about students’ progress, as well as information about our overall efficacy as a school. We are looking forward to seeing the results of these tests when they are published next term.

During the weeks of Lent, with our focus on raising awareness and funds for the 2024 Project Compassion campaign, the school has been abuzz with activity. Each homeroom is working on a fundraising stall, often during lunch time, to contribute to the community’s overall donation to Caritas Australia. So far, $2786 has been raised, and there are still a few weeks to go before Lent concludes with the Easter celebration of Jesus’ rising on the third day.

In addition to this, last week the Social Justice Leaders worked with Miss Reynolds and Miss McGlone on a dignity drive. As part of their awareness-raising about equity and inclusion for all women during the week of International Women’s Day, the Catherine McAuley community was asked to donate personal care products for women using the Parramatta Women’s Shelter.

For both focus areas, the contributions made by families in the Catherine McAuley community have been very generous, and will make a significant difference to the lives of many. I would like to thank you all for your support of these focus areas, and for working with us to improve equity for all, just as we have learned to do by following the example of our patroness, the Venerable Catherine McAuley.

Best wishes to you all for a wonderful week.

YEAR 12 HOSPITALITY ☕  Year 12 Hospitality students had a very early start last Thursday as they caught the 6.58am train from Westmead to Central so as to attend the Barista Course they were enrolled in. As part of their Food and Beverage Hospitality Module the students had to successfully present a wide range of espresso coffees. The students were assessed verbally and online on the many aspects of espresso coffee production so as to complete a certificate in 'Prepare and Serve Espresso coffee.'

Teacher Mrs Maher said the students all did an amazing job and were praised by the assessors many times on how wonderful, polite and considerate they were and how competent they were in their practical skills. Mrs Maher said she is very proud of how they conducted themselves as the course is quite strenuous. Well done 12 Hospitality!
